It is defined by the lack of neurologic involvement, and affected adults present with accumulation of glucocerebroside in the reticuloendothelial system causing organomegaly, hypersplenism, conjunctival pingueculae, skin pigmentation, and osteoarticular disease. Histologic examination with nephron segment-specific lactins showed successful reconstitution of proximal tubules, distal tubules, loop of Henle, collecting tubules, and collecting ducts.
